Short Summary:
1. The first Developer Preview of Android 15 is here.
2. Focusing on security, performance, and camera features.
3. Developer Preview 1 is available on Pixel 6 and above devices.
Google released the first developer preview of Android 15 a few hours ago for all the developers worldwide to try out the latest features from Google to try out new app compatibility. As we know the first version is built for developers who want to stay up to date with their app with new APIs.
As we know Google still uses the dessert codename for Android 15 Vanilla Ice Cream. We will know a lot of things about what Google will offer over the next few weeks and months.
What’s New in Developer Preview 1
Google has started testing Android 15 through Developer Previews, though the final stable release is still a few months away. Google highlighted that continuously focusing on user privacy and security, minimize battery impact and maximises app performance across various devices. Here’s everything that you should know about Android 15.
Protecting user privacy and security
- Privacy Sandbox on Android: Android 15 brings Android AD Services up to extension level 10 and focuses on user privacy and personalised advertising experiences.
- Health Connect: The update integrates Android 14 extensions 10 around Health Connect by Android, a secure and centralised platform for managing health and fitness data.
- File integrity: Android 15’s File Integrity Manager includes new APIs leveraging the fs-verity feature to enhanced security, protecting against potential malware or unauthorized file modifications.
- Partial screen sharing: Users can now share or record just an app window rather than the entire device screen in Android 15.
In-app Camera Controls
Android 15 adds a few new extensions for more control over the camera hardware on supported devices. These extensions include Low light enhancements that boost the brightness light of the camera preview and advanced flash power adjustments while capturing photos.
Android 15 Platform Stability will reach in June 2024 and the testing will end by October with finally releasing the stable mode. As for now, it’s too early to tell what are upcoming features, just wait for final releases. It might add some new features to the stable version.
Should you download Android 15 on your phone? I think not because as the name suggests, Developer Preview 1 is meant for developers and not for daily use. Developer Preview has some bugs, especially the very first one preview. If you ain’t a developer you don’t need to worry, DP1 is meant for those who need to test their apps with Android 15. If you have recently Google Pixel device, you will be the first one in line to get the Android 15 update.
That’s what we know about the new Android 15, but what about the release date? DP1 is available today and DP2 is expected in March by following the Android Blog.
