Short Summary:
1. Android 15 gets dark mode in any app.
2. Google will likely make the new dark mode control easily available in the accessibility settings.
3. Fitbit or Amazon Shopping still don’t have a dark theme.
4. The “make all apps dark” feature is still in progress.
Android 15 will let you force apps to set dark mode in any app
Users seem to truly love for dark mode option in apps. Google introduced dark mode in September 2019 with Android 10 and now most popular apps have a dark theme that supports the system toggle, which allows users to customize their app. Soon Android 15 will allow you to force apps to go dark, even if apps don’t have a native dark theme.
As all we know most Android Phones have default settings for dark mode options but lots of your favourite Android Apps don’t support it yet like the Amazon Shopping app. With the Android 15 update, you can make all apps dark without an official dark theme to go dark.
An APK teardown by Mishaal Rahman over at Android Authority, we get a view of a new best feature that will let you force dark mode in any app on your Android device. This new feature “make all apps dark” option looks like a huge upgrade from what Android currently give us, called “override force-dark.” Google designed the “override force-dark” option as a fast way for developers to make a dark theme to their apps “without natively setting a DayNight theme,”, it enhances the user’s experience and looks way better across all your Android apps.
Rahman showed something amazing on the site, The new option “make all apps dark” feature. It also looks like the developer’s opt-out option isn’t working anymore. Check out the screenshots above to compare how it worked with apps like Fitbit and Amazon Shopping app compared to the old method. This upcoming feature popped up in the Android 14 QPR2 Beta 2 update back in January.
As you can see, “make all apps dark” isn’t perfect, as it still lowers the contrast of some buttons in the Amazon Shopping app.
Few people got to the new toggle that is available under Settings > Accessibility > Color and Motion
The “make all apps dark” toggle is hidden under accessibility settings rather than developer options.
Google’s smart move, making it way easier to find the toggle for the new dark mode control right in the accessibility settings once it goes live. It’s in the developer preview means Google is thinking about giving users a more friendly environment about how apps will look.
The “make all apps dark” feature is still in progress and it may be different when it goes live for the public. We’re just waiting for Google’s green flag that controls its visibility. Android 15 Beta 2 Phase is going to be released during Google I/O 2024 next month maybe this feature will go live that time.
